Artway Gallery, which opened doors in 2009 with initiative and support of 24 artists, is fast gaining reputation as a much sought after venue for Sri Lanka's best-known artists and connoisseurs of art from the island and abroad.
Housed in a splendid 'Walauwa' (manor) style home, with its distinctive colonial architecture and wide open spaces, Artway Gallery features art encompassing a variety of styles and genres, including still life paintings, portraits, landscapes, abstract art, installation art and sculpture using a variety of innovative media. Ordinary objects, which wouldn't merit a second glance, have been transformed into miraculous objets d'art by talented artists and innovators.
While nurturing and developing local artistic talent, Artway Gallery is very much part of the international artistic community, conducting exhibitions and workshops overseas, forging links with artists and institutions worldwide, while keeping abreast of new developments in the visual arts.
Well-attended exhibitions and workshops, featuring live models and performing artistes, as well as an in-house institute for budding artists of all ages, add to the allure of Artway as 'the' place for art lovers.
It's location at Old Kesbewa Road, Nugegoda, affords easy access, while a quick tour of www.artgallery.lk gives, at a glance, what's in store.
Artway Gallery accepts commissioned work for portraits, busts, paintings, sculptures, outdoor sculptures, murals, themed interior decor for homes and institutions, landscaping and gardening or any other form of art, including digital media.
Most items displayed in the gallery are available for purchase online. Payments can be made through a secure online portal, while shipping is done through reputed international couriers.
Under the watchful eye and expert guidance of versatile founders Sudath Abeysekara and Achala Gunawardene, with several international exhibitions to their credit, a distinctive Sri Lankan style of art is evident – showcasing the island's rich artistic heritage, breathtaking scenery, abundant fauna and flora, as well as its smiling, friendly people and the everyday rhythms of their lives.
Drawing inspiration from the classical masters through the ages, to surrealists, cubists, fauvists and modern artists and also traditional Sri Lankan art, these artists have stamped their distinctive style and class on all items on display.
Sudath honed his natural flair for visual arts with a Bachelors degree in Fine Art from the University of Colombo. After gaining several year' experience at reputed advertising agencies as an Art Director Sudath branched off, along with Achala, into forming Artway Gallery.
Over the years, Sudath has exhibited in the UK and China, as well as the SAARC region - India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Bhutan. His artistic talent is on permanent display in the form of a giant sculpture commissioned by Sri Lanka Telecom at their headquarters.
Sudath also functions as the Creative Director and driving force behind Art Sense Advertising, which handles one of Sri Lanka's leading banks, in addition to leading blue-chip corporate.
Achala, a reputed teacher of Art, was selected as part of the artistic team to exhibit at the Beijing Binal Art Exhibition, China, in 2010. She has held successful solo exhibitions in Sri Lanka.
